There are times when we are communicating our ideas through facial expressions or gestures. But there are individuals who really have a hard time using the spoken language in communication. To aid the children or adults with autism, they have been provided with augmentative and alternative communicative (AAC) devices and methods.
At Magical Kids Therapy, we have adopted the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) program to help a child or adult build a vocabulary and consistently articulate desires, observations, and feelings through various methods, such as the following:
- Unaided Communication: facial expressions, gestures, body language, pointing, or eye pointing
- Low-Tech Communication: using pen and paper to write a message, using communication charts or books with pictures, and using photos or symbols
- High-Tech Communication: mobile devices, iPhones, iPads, tablets, and laptops
